"When the switchport and no switchport interface configuration commands are entered more than 20,000 times on a port of a Catalyst 3750 switch or on a Cisco EtherSwitch service module, all available memory is used, and the switch halts.

There is no workaround. (CSCed54150)" *

Aside from the amusement, you'll quickly notice that updating and patching your switches is not always enough; sometimes only a hardware upgrade will rid your network of potential issues.  If you look at the release notes for Cisco IOS 15.0(2) for example, they are replete with unresolved caveats for Catalyst 2960 switches.  While you won't see any switches that old in the data center, you'll still come across them in a wiring closet.

The need for a new switch is typically driven by the need for increased capacity or features, including new IPv6-related functions.  But if you're lobbying for a purchase (or selling an install), also cite a few of the unaddressed flaws in the old switch; some of them won't make you laugh.
